Marvel Rivals Dev Feels Pressure to Maintain Excitement, Announces Big Season 3 Changes
NetEase Games is making significant adjustments to the post-launch roadmap for Marvel Rivals to keep the game's momentum and excitement alive. They are shortening the length of seasons from three months to two and committing to introduce at least one new hero each month. This update was hinted at in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, which also revealed details about Season 2, set to launch on April 11 with the new Vanguard, Emma Frost. Mid-season, Ultron will be introduced, though his class remains undisclosed.
Starting with Season 3, whose release date is yet to be announced, the game will see accelerated content updates. This means players won't have to wait as long between new hero releases, enhancing the game's dynamic nature. Guangyun Chen, the creative director, emphasized in the Dev Vision video that these changes stem from a desire to maintain the high level of engagement seen since the game's debut in December.
Chen highlighted the team's aim to fulfill fans' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by introducing new modes and a diverse roster of characters. These plans follow extensive internal discussions and evaluations, ensuring the game's systems can handle the increased content flow. More details on how these changes will affect gameplay will be shared before Season 3's launch.
Just hours ago, NetEase unveiled details about Marvel Rivals Season 2, transitioning from a vampire takeover theme to a storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This shift will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with further information to be released in the coming weeks.
Since its launch on December 6 across PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success. It attracted 10 million players in just three days, with a peak of 480,990 concurrent players on Steam. Season 1 in January further boosted its popularity, reaching 644,269 concurrent players, ranking it as the 15th most-played game on Steam.
However, player numbers have been declining, prompting NetEase to revise its roadmap. Despite this, Marvel Rivals remains highly popular and among Steam's most-played games. The launch of Season 2 and the subsequent Season 3 are expected to reinvigorate interest.
