Marvel's New Star Wars Series to Explore the New Republic Era
Marvel Comics' flagship Star Wars series is set for a May 2025 relaunch. The new series, following the Battle of Jakku and the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, will depict Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa's efforts to establish the New Republic and restore order to a galaxy in turmoil.
Alex Segura, writer of the Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku miniseries, pens this latest installment. Veteran Star Wars illustrator Phil Noto (Star Wars: Poe Dameron) provides the art, with Noto and Leinil Yu creating the covers for the debut issue.
Segura and Noto's Star Wars unfolds approximately two years post-Return of the Jedi, after the final major conflict between the Empire and Rebel Alliance at Jakku. The New Republic strives to become the galaxy's dominant power in this hopeful new era. However, Luke and his companions face fresh challenges from opportunistic pirates, criminals, and other antagonists exploiting the power vacuum.
"Having concluded the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can now propel ourselves into a new, uncharted era, introducing fresh galactic threats, enemies, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to confront, blending the familiar with the unexpected," Segura explained to StarWars.com. "These narratives will be action-packed, featuring the character-driven moments Star Wars fans anticipate, offering unique perspectives on the galaxy and its landscape, ensuring accessibility for new readers with each issue. We're incredibly excited."
Noto added, "Alex is a phenomenal writer, crafting compelling storylines and original characters for this series, and I'm delighted to bring them to life! It's also been exhilarating to portray the classic characters in the post-Return of the Jedi era, as there are no existing film or TV counterparts. I get to design new looks for them while referencing the actors from the 80s to maintain the feel of this period."
Star Wars #1 launches May 7, 2025, coinciding with that year's Star Wars Day celebrations.
This isn't Marvel's only post-Return of the Jedi comic. February sees the launch of Star Wars: Legacy of Vader, exploring Kylo Ren's journey after The Last Jedi.
