Core Boxes
Each core box of Monster Hunter World: The Board Game is a complete game, featuring four hunters and four monsters. These boxes can also be combined, allowing you to mix and match hunters and monsters across different sets. While most components are unique to each set, there is some overlap, with extra cards provided for combining sets.
Starting with a single core box is advisable, and as you grow more invested, you can expand your collection with smaller expansions or consider purchasing a second core set. Both core sets maintain the same high-quality production, featuring the same gameplay mechanics and gigantic monster miniatures that enhance the scale and immersion. The choice between them often comes down to aesthetic preference or nostalgia tied to the video game series.

The monsters include the armored Barroth, the swamp-fish Jyuratodus, the bird-like Pukei-Pukei, and the underground behemoth Diablos. The hunters here wield unique weapons such as the Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Heavy Bowgun, and Insect Glaive.
Retail Expansions
Alongside the core boxes, a variety of expansions were available during the game’s Kickstarter campaign, many of which are still available at retail. However, Nergigante and Teostra are harder to find, with Teostra being exclusive to Steamforged Games.
Nergigante, Kushala Daora, and Teostra are Elder Dragons, introducing a new type of monster with additional quests and a higher difficulty level. These expansions also feature larger miniatures, enhancing the challenge and extending your campaign.
While these expansions add significant content, they can be expensive and some features are specific to one core box or the other. For example, Kushala Daora includes special crafting weapons tailored to hunters from both core sets. Therefore, acquiring the second core set might be the best initial step for expanding your game.
