Exploring the Oilwell Basin

IGN's exclusive chat with directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka introduces the Oilwell Basin, a unique vertical locale unlike the series' typical horizontal landscapes. Fujioka explains the basin's layered structure, transitioning from oily swamps at the surface to magma-filled depths. The deeper you delve, the hotter it gets.

Tokuda reveals a transformative element: the "Plenty" event. Reaching the lower levels during this event transforms the basin into an underwater volcanic ecosystem, drawing inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. The environment, while seemingly barren, teems with unique creatures mirroring an ocean floor habitat.

Nu Udra: The Black Flame

The Oilwell Basin's apex predator is the Nu Udra, a colossal, octopus-like monster with a flammable, slimy body. Utilizing its tentacles to ensnare prey, it unleashes devastating fire attacks. Completing the elemental trio (Rey Dau – lightning, Uth Duna – water), Nu Udra embodies fire.

Fujioka explains the design inspiration: a desire to incorporate a tentacled creature, modified from an aquatic base for a more striking, demonic appearance. The unique battle music further enhances this demonic theme, incorporating elements reminiscent of black magic.

Combat presents a significant challenge. Nu Udra's numerous tentacles allow for rapid-fire attacks, both targeted and area-of-effect, and its immunity to Flash Bombs adds another layer of difficulty.

More Oilwell Basin Inhabitants

Beyond Nu Udra, the Oilwell Basin houses other formidable creatures. The Ajarakan, a fiery, monkey-like monster, utilizes martial arts-inspired moves and powerful fists. The Rompopolo, a globular monster with needle-like mouthparts, employs toxic gas attacks; its design inspired by stereotypical mad scientists. Despite its menacing appearance, its rewards yield surprisingly cute equipment.

A familiar face returns: Gravio from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Its volcanic habitat and fiery breath make it a fitting addition to the Oilwell Basin's roster.
