Netflix Games Scraps Six Upcoming Indie Games From Their Roster Including Don’t Starve Together

Feb 23,25

Netflix recently made significant changes to its gaming lineup, removing six previously announced titles from its mobile platform. This unexpected shift affects several anticipated games, including Don't Starve Together, Tales of the Shire, Compass Point: West, Lab Rat, Rotwood, and Thirsty Suitors.

This isn't the first time Netflix has canceled games after initial announcements; Crashlands 2 faced a similar fate. This strategic adjustment reflects a broader shift in Netflix's gaming strategy. The company appears to be prioritizing narrative-driven games and titles based on its own popular shows and movies, moving away from its previous focus on indie games. This is evident in the upcoming additions to Netflix Stories, featuring adaptations of shows like Ginny & Georgia and Sweet Magnolias.

Despite the cancellations, most of the affected games are still under development and will launch on other platforms. Don't Starve Together, initially slated for a Netflix mobile release, will now launch via Playdigious. Rotwood remains in early access on Steam. Tales of the Shire has been delayed until early 2025. The removal of Compass Point: West, a Next Games title (a Netflix subsidiary), and Thirsty Suitors is particularly noteworthy.

This reassessment of Netflix's gaming portfolio highlights a changing approach to game selection and development. While some anticipated titles won't be available on Netflix Games, alternative release platforms remain for many of these games.
