NieR Automata - How To Unlock & Use Chapter Select
Quick Links
NieR: Automata allows players extensive freedom to explore, tackle side quests, and generally roam the game world between main story missions. Many elements might seem missable on a first playthrough. Even after seeing the initial credits, the game is far from complete. Accessing all content, including earlier side quests, requires completing the game's full narrative arc. Here's how to unlock and utilize the Chapter Select feature.
This section contains minor spoilers related to achieving the true ending.
How To Unlock Chapter Select In NieR: Automata
Unlocking Chapter Select necessitates reaching one of the game's true endings. This involves completing three playthroughs, culminating in a specific ending choice during the final confrontation of the third playthrough. While referred to as playthroughs, many consider each as a distinct chapter within the overarching narrative.
After viewing the credits at the end of a playthrough, save your game. Reload that save to begin the next section, playing as the designated character. The final playthrough involves multiple character shifts; its completion unlocks Chapter Select for that save file.
How Chapter Select Functions In NieR: Automata
Chapter Select is accessible from two locations:
- The main menu of your save file upon game loading.
- Any access point within the game world.
This menu allows selection of any game chapter from the main story. Your progress, including weapons, level, and items, carries over. When loading a chapter, you can choose your character, provided that chapter featured multiple playable characters.
It's important to note that completed side quests cannot be replayed, regardless of the selected chapter. If switching chapters mid-playthrough, utilize the save function at an access point. Failing to do so results in the loss of any progress, including levels and items, made within that chapter. Chapter Select provides a convenient method to explore all content and revisit earlier choices to pursue alternative endings.
