Ninja Gaiden 4 Stuns with Unexpected Unveiling at Xbox Developer Direct
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a thrilling surprise: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and a remake, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black! Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja." This marks a significant return for the franchise, with Ninja Gaiden 4 being the first mainline entry in over a decade.
A New Era for the Ninja Gaiden Franchise
Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces a fresh protagonist: Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, striving to become a Master Ninja.
Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic hero. While Yakumo takes center stage, Ryu remains a crucial figure, serving as a formidable challenge and mentor in the narrative. Ryu Hayabusa will also be playable.
The game retains the series' signature brutal and challenging combat, introducing a new fighting style for Yakumo: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, alongside the Raven Style. The development team assures fans that the action will feel authentic to the Ninja Gaiden series, while incorporating PlatinumGames' signature speed and dynamism. The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase.
Release and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for release in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remake for a New Generation
In addition to Ninja Gaiden 4, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and is included with Xbox Game Pass. This remake features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, offering a modern take on a classic.
Team Ninja aimed to provide fans with an enjoyable experience while anticipating Ninja Gaiden 4, ensuring the remake appeals to both veterans and newcomers.
This collaborative effort between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames promises a thrilling new chapter in the Ninja Gaiden saga, blending classic elements with fresh innovations. The return of Ryu Hayabusa and the introduction of Yakumo create a compelling narrative and gameplay experience.
