Nintendo 64 Classic Set for Return
Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X
Rumors suggest a new port of the classic first-person shooter, Doom 64, is on the horizon for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. This follows an updated ESRB rating listing the game for these platforms. The 1997 Nintendo 64 exclusive received a 2020 remaster for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring enhanced visuals and a new level. This new listing strongly suggests a current-gen release is imminent.
While Bethesda and id Software remain officially silent, the ESRB's action is a strong indicator of an upcoming launch. Historically, ESRB ratings precede game releases by only a few months. This aligns with past instances where ESRB listings leaked game announcements, such as the 2023 Felix the Cat re-release.
The updated rating notably omits PC, though the 2020 version included a Steam release. Furthermore, PC players can already experience a Doom 64-like experience through modding existing Doom titles. Given Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles, a similar quiet launch for Doom 64 is entirely possible.
Looking beyond Doom 64, 2025 promises another exciting entry in the franchise: Doom: The Dark Ages. Anticipation is high, with potential release date announcements expected as early as January. Re-releasing classic titles like Doom 64 serves as excellent pre-release promotion for the upcoming installment.
In short, get ready to revisit the demonic hellscapes of Doom 64 on next-gen consoles very soon.
