Nintendo delays Switch 2 US preorders over tariff issue

Nintendo has postponed U.S. pre-orders for its upcoming Switch 2 console, citing potential impacts from trade tariffs and shifting market conditions. Originally scheduled for April 9, 2025, the company has yet to announce a new pre-order date but confirms the system's June 5 release remains unchanged.
Nintendo's Official Statement
The company told IGN:
"U.S. pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 won't begin April 9, 2025 as we evaluate potential tariff impacts and market conditions. We'll announce updated timing later. The June 5 launch date remains unaffected."
This delay currently only affects the United States. Pre-order schedules in other regions like the UK continue as planned.
Pricing remains set at $449.99 for the base console, with a Mario Kart World bundle priced at $499.99. The standalone Mario Kart World retails for $79.99. The complete Switch 2 package includes:
- Nintendo Switch 2 console
- Joy-Con 2 controllers (L+R)
- Joy-Con 2 Grip
- Joy-Con 2 Straps
- Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
- Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable
- Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter
- USB-C Charging Cable
Potential Price Adjustments
The delay has sparked speculation about possible price increases, coming on the heels of existing consumer concerns about next-gen pricing. Former Nintendo of America PR executives Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang criticized the pricing strategy in their recent YouTube commentary.
"This feels like a defining moment for Nintendo's positioning," Ellis remarked.
Wider Economic Impact
The postponement follows significant trade developments between the U.S. and China. Recent tariffs have created economic uncertainty, potentially affecting consumer electronics pricing globally.
Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad noted: "While Nintendo diversified production to Vietnam anticipating China tariffs, new reciprocal tariffs on Vietnam and Japan have created additional complications that could force price reassessments worldwide."
