Nintendo Teases New 3D Mario for Switch 2

Aug 08,26

Nintendo is hinting that a new 3D Mario game could be coming soon, though fans will need to wait a bit longer for official details.

In a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser responded to calls for another major Mario installment. While he didn’t directly confirm a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey is in the works, his remarks suggest it won’t be long before we hear more.

“Stay tuned,” Bowser stated. “We have a deep catalog and a wide array of intellectual properties that will likely come to the platform.”

Though Bowser’s words don’t confirm an imminent 3D Mario announcement, they offer some reassurance to fans who noticed its absence from the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. When Nintendo officially revealed its next hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased major titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, yet a new 3D Mario platformer was missing.

The last flagship Mario game launched in October 2017, only months after the original Switch debuted. That means it’s been nearly eight years since the last major Mario release. While a title like Donkey Kong Bananza might help fill the gap temporarily, it’s not the Super Mario Odyssey 2 many were anticipating. Still, Nintendo’s iconic plumber remains a key part of the company’s extensive IP lineup, so it would be surprising not to see a new 3D Mario arrive in the near future.
