Nintendo Reveals Pricey Upgrades for Switch 2 Games
Nintendo has officially announced the upgrade costs for transitioning two popular games from the original Switch to the Switch 2 Edition: Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Super Mario Party Jamboree. The price tag for these upgrades is notably higher than expected.
Previously, upgrading The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom from the Switch 1 to the Switch 2 Edition was set at $9.99 each. However, NintendoLife reported that the upgrade packs for both Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Super Mario Party Jamboree are priced at more than double this amount.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition of Breath of the Wild boasts improved visuals and performance, achievements, and integration with the new "Zelda Notes" service on the Nintendo Switch Online app. Owners of the original Breath of the Wild on the Switch can purchase an "upgrade pack" for $10 to enjoy these enhancements.
The Switch 2 Edition of Kirby and the Forgotten Land introduces new story content titled "Star-Crossed World". On the other hand, Super Mario Party Jamboree's Switch 2 Edition features a new suite of content called "Jamboree TV", which utilizes the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, Switch 2 microphone, and the separately sold Switch 2 USB-C camera. Additionally, this version offers upgraded resolution up to 1440p in TV mode, improved frame rates, new minigames, and enhanced online functionalities.
Although U.S. prices are yet to be confirmed on the American Nintendo eShop—potentially due to ongoing trade uncertainties with tariffs under the Trump administration—the UK Nintendo eShop lists the Kirby and the Forgotten Land upgrade pack at £16.99 / €19.99, significantly higher than the £7.99 / €9.99 for upgrading either Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom. The upgrade for Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV is similarly priced, suggesting a U.S. price point of $19.99.
The elevated $20 upgrade fee for both games may be influenced by the substantial $80 price of the full Kirby and The Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World and Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV. Both original Switch versions are priced at $59.99, $20 less than their Switch 2 counterparts.
For those not upgrading, here are the U.S. prices for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games:
- Kirby and The Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World - $79.99
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - $69.99
- Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV - $79.99
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition - $79.99
It's worth noting that the upgrade packs for both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are available at no additional cost to Nintendo Switch Online and Expansion Pack subscribers. However, no such offer exists for players looking to upgrade Kirby or Super Mario Party Jamboree.
Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders began today, April 24, with the console priced at $449.99. The response has been overwhelming, and Nintendo has cautioned U.S. customers who pre-ordered through the My Nintendo Store that delivery on release day is not guaranteed due to high demand.
