Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: Official 1080p vs Hori's 480p
Hori's Piranha Plant camera for the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts a resolution of just 480p, which pales in comparison to Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera that offers a crisp 1080p video capture quality. The UK My Nintendo Store has confirmed these specifications, setting the stage for a clear distinction between the two products.

Despite its lower resolution, Hori’s Piranha Plant camera, officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a more budget-friendly price than Nintendo's own $49.99 camera. It's important to note that users have the flexibility to use either the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera with the Switch 2. Both cameras are set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.
The Piranha Plant camera offers unique functionality. The part of the Piranha that houses the webcam can be detached from the pot, allowing you to place it directly on top of the Switch 2, providing a level of portability that Nintendo's camera does not offer. Additionally, users can close the plant's mouth to cover the lens, adding an element of fun and control to the device.
The announcement of the Piranha Plant camera's 480p resolution has caused a stir among Nintendo fans. On Reddit, user Ramen536Pie expressed disbelief, questioning, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found humor in the situation, suggesting, "Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Meanwhile, pokemonfitness1420 humorously pondered, "Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?"
During the recent Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2's GameChat feature, which can be activated with a press of the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature allows players to watch each other playing the same or different games and, with the aid of a camera, even see one another. The built-in microphone promises reliable performance across various gaming environments, and the C button's chat menu is designed to be a comprehensive multiplayer tool, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online initiative in years.
