"Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Original Games"
The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 has arrived, and as previously reported, it boasts impressive backwards compatibility with Switch 1 games. However, Nintendo is going above and beyond by introducing specially enhanced versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhancements are not just limited to graphical improvements and increased frame rates; they promise a significantly enriched gaming experience.
**What Games are Playable on Switch 2?** ----------------------------------------Nintendo has outlined three primary categories of games for the Switch 2: Native Switch 2 games, designed exclusively for the new system; compatible Switch 1 games, which can be played directly on the Switch 2 using their original cartridges; and Switch 2 Edition games, which are enhanced versions of Switch 1 titles featuring new features and performance upgrades.
It's worth noting that this categorization excludes the extensive library of classic games available through Nintendo Switch Online, spanning titles from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now the GameCube.
So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?
The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct emphasized that Switch 2 Edition games offer more than just minor upgrades. For instance, Super Mario Party Jamboree's Switch 2 Edition introduces Jamboree TV, a new content suite that leverages the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2's microphone, and a separately sold USB-C camera. Alongside enhanced resolution up to 1440p in TV mode and improved frame rates, players can expect new minigames and enhanced online features.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, as a cross-gen title, will support mouse controls via Joy-Con 2 and offer multiple display modes, including Quality Mode (60fps at 4K docked, 1080p at 60fps handheld) and Performance Mode (120fps at 1080p docked, 120fps at 720p handheld), all with HDR support.
Other Switch 2 Edition games, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land, will receive new story content like the Star-Crossed World add-on, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will gain additional features through the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App, providing guides and in-game assistance.
Games like Pokemon Legends: Z-A will focus primarily on performance and resolution enhancements.
When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5, 2025, with the first batch of Switch 2 Edition games launching around the same time. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will have their Switch 2 Editions available on launch day.
Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV will follow on July 24, 2025, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land's update will be released on August 28, 2025. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are expected to launch sometime in 2025, though specific dates have not been announced.
**How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?** -----------------------------------------The pricing of Switch 2 Editions varies depending on ownership of the original Switch 1 game. If you do not own the Switch 1 version, you can purchase the Switch 2 Edition, which comes in a distinctive red-colored physical case or features a prominent Switch 2 logo in digital versions.
For those who already own the Switch 1 game and want the Switch 2 upgrades, an upgrade pack will be necessary. These packs will be available at select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop. The cost of these upgrade packs has yet to be disclosed by Nintendo.
Notably, some upgrade packs, such as those for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included in a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also provides access to online features and a classic game library.
