Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Face Store Restrictions to Combat Scalpers

Apr 13,25

The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it's expected to be a highly sought-after item. To ensure that genuine Switch fans get a chance to pre-order, Nintendo has introduced specific measures on its official store. On the My Nintendo Store, users with a Nintendo Account can express their interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 system and "select accessories." Those who register their interest will receive an invitation email when their turn comes up, which will be valid for 72 hours. However, to be eligible, you must have spent considerable time on your current Switch and be a member of Nintendo Switch Online.

According to the fine print on the site, "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025." These invitations are "non-transferable" and will be sent to the email addresses linked to the Nintendo Account used to register interest. Additionally, there is a one-per-account limit for the system and each accessory during the invitation period. Currently, you can express interest in either a base Nintendo Switch 2 system or a bundle that includes Mario Kart World.

Once an order is placed, it will be shipped post-purchase, and the estimated shipping date will be provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo also clarifies that "release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times." These steps seem designed to ensure that the Nintendo Switch 2 is purchased by individuals who intend to use it for gaming, rather than reselling it at a profit.

Scalping has been a significant issue with the launches of popular products, notably affecting the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve implemented a successful queue system for the Steam Deck, which linked purchases to Steam accounts and considered the account creation date. It's evident that Nintendo is adopting a similar strategy with its My Nintendo Store process to combat scalping.

While there will be other avenues to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2, these measures are aimed at helping dedicated Switch 1 owners secure a pre-order amidst potential launch day chaos.
