Nintendo Switch Update 20.1.0 Enhances NSO Launch Sound from Home Menu
Nintendo has rolled out a new system update for the Switch, just days before the highly anticipated launch of the Switch 2.
According to the official patch notes, Nintendo Switch System Update Ver. 20.1.0 introduces a handful of changes, including the ever-present "general system stability improvements" designed to enhance the overall user experience.
More notably, the update brings visual tweaks to the Parental Control settings and alters the sound that plays when launching Nintendo Switch Online from the Home Menu. The new audio cue is noticeably more upbeat—giving the experience a fresher, more modern feel. As spotted by X / Twitter user @Nexusvoyager, this updated sound is likely a preview of what Switch 2 users will hear when accessing Nintendo Switch Online on the new console.

An important note for future Switch 2 owners: if you're planning to perform a system transfer from your current Nintendo Switch to the Switch 2 using local communication, your existing console must be updated to system version 20.1.0 or later to proceed.
This update arrives in the final stretch before the Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025. In recent developments, IGN reported on an early unit that surfaced online—though it was quickly rendered irrelevant by a mandatory day-one patch and swiftly removed due to a copyright claim.
To date, we’ve played Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2, and have learned about free performance upgrades for Switch 1 games, variable refresh rate support details, and further insights into GameChat, which will require phone number verification to use. While pre-orders sold out quickly last month, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser confirms that sufficient Switch 2 units will be available to meet demand throughout the holiday season.Nintendo Switch System Update Ver. 20.1.0 (Released May 27, 2025)
