Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will soon be managed by NetEase, effective January 2024. This operational transfer shouldn't disrupt player progress, as save data and game advancement will be carried over. While this news is reassuring for fans, it also raises questions about Square Enix's future mobile gaming strategy.

The recent announcement of a Final Fantasy XIV mobile version, developed in partnership with Tencent's Lightspeed Studios, contrasts with the NetEase handover of Octopath Traveler. This outsourcing, coupled with past decisions like the closure of Square Enix Montreal (developer of Hitman GO and Deus Ex GO), suggests a potential scaling back of Square Enix's mobile ambitions.

Despite this shift, the continued availability of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is positive news in a year marked by numerous mobile game closures. The strong interest in a mobile FFXIV port underscores a significant demand for Square Enix titles on mobile platforms. The company's evolving mobile strategy remains a topic of discussion, but for now, players can enjoy the continued availability of their favorite game.
