Digital Foundry’s YouTube channel has shared a comprehensive hour-long video comparing the 2004 classic Half-Life 2 with its upcoming remaster, Half-Life 2 RTX, crafted using NVIDIA’s advanced tools. Orbifold Studios, a skilled team of modders, is spearheading the project, delivering striking visual enhancements like improved lighting, fresh assets, ray tracing, and DLSS 4 support. This remaster will be available at no cost to those who own the original Half-Life 2 on Steam, though a release date has yet to be announced.

On March 18, a free demo will launch, letting players explore two iconic settings: the eerie, deserted Ravenholm and the oppressive Nova Prospekt prison. A recent trailer highlighted the game’s cutting-edge ray tracing and DLSS 4 technology, which significantly enhances frame rate performance.

Spanning an unprecedented 75 minutes, the video features experts diving deep into gameplay from Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt. They consistently juxtapose the remastered visuals with the original, showcasing the modding team’s transformative work.

Orbifold Studios is enhancing Half-Life 2 RTX with high-resolution textures, sophisticated lighting, ray tracing, and DLSS 4 integration. While Digital Foundry’s analysts were impressed by the results, they observed minor frame rate dips in some sections. Nonetheless, the overhaul revitalizes this iconic game, delivering a breathtaking modern experience.
