Oscars to Introduce Best Stunt Design Award
After a century of being overlooked, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finally introduced a new category for the Oscars: an award for achievement in stunt design. The Board of Governors made this exciting announcement via social media, confirming that the new category will debut at the 2028 Oscars, marking the 100th Academy Awards.
The Academy highlighted the significance of this addition by featuring images from acclaimed films such as "Everything Everywhere All at Once" (2022), "RRR" (2022), and "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" (2011). However, these films won't be eligible for the award, as the first movies considered will be those released in 2027.
In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang expressed their pride in recognizing the essential role stunt design plays in cinema. They praised the technical and creative artists for their dedication and innovation, celebrating this long-awaited recognition.
Further details and rules for the new category will be shared in 2027.
The introduction of the stunt design Oscar represents a major triumph in the ongoing fight for recognition of stunt work in film. New Oscar categories are only considered once a year, and previous attempts to establish a stunt coordination category from 1991 to 2012 were unsuccessful.
The most recent new category added to the Oscars was Achievement in Casting, approved last year and set to be awarded starting with the 98th Academy Awards for films released in 2025.
