People Are Already Camping Out for an Nvidia RTX 5090, Despite Retailer Warning About the January Cold
The arrival of a new GPU generation is finally here. On January 30, NVIDIA launched the highly anticipated RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 — two flagship graphics cards set to redefine performance standards in gaming and content creation. In our RTX 5090 review, we hailed it as "the fastest graphics card on the consumer market," and excitement surrounding this next-gen hardware has reached an all-time high.
Priced at $2,000 for the RTX 5090 and $1,000 for the RTX 5080, these are premium products aimed at power users and enthusiasts. Despite their steep price tags, demand appears to be off the charts. Reports suggest that inventory will be extremely limited, especially for the RTX 5090. One UK-based retailer even stated they only have “single-digit” units available for sale.
This scarcity has already driven eager buyers to take drastic measures. Gamers have begun camping outside Micro Center’s Tustin, California location days ahead of the release. Photos of tents near the store started appearing on Reddit and the Unofficial Micro Center Discord channel, fueling speculation about whether some campers might be scalpers hoping to profit from the expected shortage.

The images show several tents occupied by people waiting patiently for the launch. According to community reports, the larger grey tent currently houses four individuals. One camper even commented on a Reddit thread: “Hello everyone, I’m the guy that you guys are talking about in the second tent. And yes, we are buying it for our own use, no trades and no sells. We just don’t want to pay that extra money for a gaming card, and yes, we do have some time on our hands because we run a business. Good luck to everyone trying to get one.”
In a follow-up comment, he added that the atmosphere among those waiting has been friendly and respectful. As of publication, up to 10 tents had been spotted at the location, with approximately 24 people waiting in line, according to members of the Unofficial Micro Center Discord server.
In preparation for the launch, Micro Center shared its strategy for distributing the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 via a YouTube video, urging customers not to endure the cold by camping overnight. “We do discourage camping at our locations for the 5090 and 5080,” the company emphasized.

It's not unusual to see crowds forming outside Micro Center stores for GPU launches. Back in 2020, YouTuber Austin Evans documented similar scenes during the RTX 3070 release at the same Tustin location.
To manage distribution fairly, Micro Center implemented a voucher system that confirms purchases on a first-come, first-served basis. Those in line won’t be able to choose specific models — availability will depend on stock. Additionally, each customer is limited to one GPU purchase.
While Micro Center continues to advise against camping out, the message is clear: if you want a chance to secure one of these next-gen GPUs at retail price, arriving early could make all the difference.
