Professor Layton Was Supposed to End Until Nintendo Stepped In
Professor Layton's Return: A New Adventure Fueled by Nintendo
The renowned Professor Layton is back, ready for a new puzzle-solving adventure, and it's all thanks to a nudge from Nintendo. LEVEL-5's CEO recently revealed the story behind the long-awaited sequel.
A Decade-Long Hiatus Ends
After almost a decade without a new entry, the Professor Layton series is making a comeback. At Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, LEVEL-5, the series' developer, shed light on the decision-making process that led to Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.
LEVEL-5 CEO Akihiro Hino, in conversation with Yuji Horii (creator of the Dragon Quest series), explained that while they considered Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy a satisfying conclusion, Nintendo's influence proved pivotal. Hino stated that "Company ‘N’" (clearly referring to Nintendo) strongly encouraged the studio to revisit the steampunk world of Professor Layton.
"The series concluded briefly," Hino said, as reported by AUTOMATON. "However, certain individuals within the industry really wanted us to release a new game… we had a strong push from Company ‘N’."
This isn't surprising, given Nintendo's significant role in the franchise's success on the Nintendo DS and 3DS. Nintendo published numerous Professor Layton titles and considers the series a key part of the DS's legacy.
Hino added, "Upon hearing this feedback, I realized it would be beneficial to create a new game, allowing fans to experience the series with the enhanced quality afforded by the latest consoles."
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam: A Glimpse into the Adventure
Set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam reunites Professor Layton and his apprentice, Luke Triton, in Steam Bison, a vibrant American city powered by steam technology. Their new adventure involves solving a mystery surrounding Gunman King Joe, a "ghost gunslinger lost to the relentless march of progress," as revealed in recent trailers.
The game will retain the series' signature challenging puzzles, this time enhanced by the collaboration with QuizKnock, a renowned puzzle-creation team. This partnership is particularly exciting for fans, following the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey, which featured Layton's daughter, Katrielle, and deviated slightly from the core formula.
