PS5 Pro's Poor Reception Does Nothing to Slow Sales Projections
Despite mixed initial reactions, analysts predict strong sales for the newly released PS5 Pro. The console's advanced features have also sparked renewed speculation about a potential PlayStation handheld device.
Analyst Projections for PS5 Pro Sales: A Pricey Proposition
PS5 Pro's Enhanced Capabilities Fuel Handheld Console Rumors
The $700 PS5 Pro's launch has prompted analysts at Ampere Analysis to forecast sales comparable to the PS4 Pro, despite a significant price increase. Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls noted the substantial price difference between the standard PS5 and the Pro model (40-50%), far exceeding the gap between the PS4 and PS4 Pro at launch.
Ampere predicts approximately 1.3 million PS5 Pro units sold during November 2024, a shortfall of roughly 400,000 units compared to the PS4 Pro's initial sales in 2016. Harding-Rolls highlighted the price disparity, suggesting it might dampen demand. However, he believes that dedicated PlayStation fans will be less price-sensitive. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold around 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with projected sales reaching approximately 13 million units over five years. The PS5 Pro's capabilities extend beyond gaming. PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed to CNET that the console will enhance PSVR2 experiences through improved performance, enabling higher resolutions. He also mentioned future compatibility with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the AI-assisted upscaling technology. The PS5 Pro also boasts compatibility with existing PS5 accessories, including the PS Portal.
This PS Portal compatibility, coupled with earlier rumors of a PlayStation handheld capable of running PS5 games, has fueled speculation about a new portable console. While unconfirmed, the PS5 Pro's advanced features could pave the way for a new generation of PlayStation handheld devices.
