Retro Handheld Console Maker Anbernic Suspends All U.S. Shipments Amid Tariff Turmoil

Apr 28,25

Anbernic, a prominent manufacturer of retro handheld consoles, has announced a suspension of all U.S. orders due to recent changes in U.S. tariff policies. As reported by The Verge, the company advised customers to opt for products shipped from their U.S. warehouse, which remain unaffected by the new import duties. This means that orders requiring shipment from China will not be processed.

Anbernic is widely recognized for its affordable Chinese Game Boy clones, which are typically shipped directly from China upon release and then supplemented with stock from U.S. warehouses. Their website allows customers to select between shipping from the U.S. or China, although not all products are available from U.S. locations. Consequently, some popular items like the Anbernic RG CubeXX and RG 406H will no longer be accessible to American gamers.

The Trump administration's imposition of tariffs, reaching up to 145% on imports from China, with potential increases to 245% on certain goods like electric vehicles, has led to these changes. While some companies might absorb these costs, they are more commonly passed on to consumers, affecting the prices of tech and gaming products, including Nintendo Switch 2 accessories and gaming laptops.

Anbernic has stated that they are "working to find a suitable solution" for customers affected by customs fees during this transition period.

In related news, Nintendo officially revealed the Switch 2 during a 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month. Originally, pre-orders were scheduled to open in early April in the U.S., but due to uncertainties related to tariffs both in the U.S. and Canada, the pre-order date was delayed to April 24. Despite the delay, Nintendo has maintained the $449.99 price for the Switch 2 console and its games, though they raised prices on most Switch 2 accessories.
