Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse at Sega's New Fighting Game

Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, this new installment promises a fresh take on the classic fighting series.

The recently released footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, offers a glimpse into the game's visual style. While not actual gameplay, the in-engine demonstration showcases a combat sequence with meticulously choreographed moves, hinting at a polished and visually impressive final product. This highly stylized presentation, more akin to a cinematic sequence than raw gameplay footage, contrasts with the recent releases from other major fighting game franchises. The return of Virtua Fighter could very well cement the 2020s as a golden age for the genre.

Evolving Visuals: A Modern Virtua Fighter

The footage demonstrates a significant visual evolution for Virtua Fighter. Moving away from its iconic polygonal style and hyper-stylized characters, the game appears to aim for a more realistic aesthetic, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The trailer features Akira, the franchise's flagship character, sporting new outfits, a departure from his classic bandana and spiky hair.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, also behind Sega's Project Century and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster (in collaboration with Sega AM2), is leading development. Known for their work on the Yakuza series, starting with Yakuza 5, the studio's involvement suggests a commitment to both modernizing the franchise and preserving its core identity.

Details about the new Virtua Fighter game remain scarce beyond its status as a completely new entry. However, Sega's proactive showcasing of the game, including comments from project director Riichirou Yamada and Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic declaration ("Virtua Fighter is finally back!") during the VF Direct 2024 livestream, clearly indicates a strong commitment to reviving this iconic fighting game franchise.
