Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Says Writer

Apr 22,25

Are you eagerly anticipating Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Rest assured, the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is indeed moving forward with the project. We have a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, who shared his excitement with Screen Rant, saying, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Details about the movie remain largely under wraps, but we do know it is set to take place after the events of "The Rise of Skywalker." Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shed some light on its timeline in a February interview with Deadline, stating, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes Levy's film the first to delve into the post-"Rise of Skywalker" era.

In the same discussion, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of "The Mandalorian and Grogu" in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she said. Additionally, it has been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this intriguing new chapter of the Star Wars saga.

Tropper's optimistic comments suggest that the project is making good progress, though fans will have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, for its release.

Since the release of the critically divisive "Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker" in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film but has cancelled several planned projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Notably, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's schedule.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new Star Wars feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a "Dawn of the Jedi" movie helmed by James Mangold, and a "New Jedi Order" feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey post-"The Rise of Skywalker."

The Obaid-Chinoy project has faced some shifts, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars plans, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.

Disney's Star Wars lineup is expanding even further, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy that, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to hit screens will be Season 2 of "Andor," premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
