Skull and Bones Adds Land Combat in Fall Update: Ubisoft Reveals Year 2 Plans
If you're diving into Skull and Bones, get ready—Year 2 is shaping up to be the most exciting chapter yet. Ubisoft has charted an ambitious course for its pirate-filled multiplayer experience, promising massive updates that aim to transform the game into something far more expansive than its original launch vision.
During a dedicated Year 2 showcase, Ubisoft revealed a bounty of content set to roll out across 2025, with Season 3: Guts and Glory standing out as the highlight. This season brings one of the most requested features since the game's debut last February—land combat. That’s right, after over a year at sea, players will finally be able to step onto solid ground this fall and engage in swordfights, shootouts, and dynamic terrain-based battles.
The Rogue Warlord update introduces land-based missions where pirates can storm beaches and infiltrate dark, damp caves to rescue elite crew members known as Officers. While details are still scarce, a teaser video gave fans a brief glimpse into what to expect—though full access won’t arrive until later this year.
Of course, land combat isn't the only treasure coming your way. The full Year 2 roadmap is packed with new ships, modes, and mythical threats:
Season 1: Ascent into Chaos – Live now (as of April 15), this season kicks things off with the Ascension system, allowing players to enhance valuable loot items. It also introduces World Tiers for increased challenge variety, a versatile Schooner medium ship, and the team-based PvP mode Death Tides.
Season 2: Oaths of War – Launching this summer, it delivers Megaforts for large-scale naval sieges, plus the mighty Frigate—a powerful new class of large ship—to dominate the seas.
Season 3: Guts and Glory – Land combat, rogue warlords, and new PvE experiences take center stage when it drops this fall.
Season 4: Eye of the Beast – Winter 2025 brings legendary danger in the form of the terrifying Kraken, along with the Hunter’s Guild system and the fast-moving Corvette large ship.
Since its release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X | S back on February 16, 2024 (check out our review for our thoughts), Skull and Bones has seen steady growth. While Ubisoft hasn't shared official sales figures, the game reportedly achieved “record player engagement” shortly after launch. Interestingly, the release of Skull and Bones also led to a surprising 200% spike in concurrent players for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, proving that pirate fever is alive and well.
With a strong Year 2 roadmap ahead and a growing player base, Skull and Bones is setting sail toward a bold new horizon.
