Sony to Remove PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus in 2024

Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus strategy, set to take effect from January 2026. As part of this change, PlayStation 4 games will no longer be a regular feature in the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog. Instead, Sony will focus exclusively on PlayStation 5 titles.

This news was shared alongside the reveal of February 2025's monthly titles on the PlayStation Blog. Sony's statement clarified that while PS4 games will still be occasionally available, the primary focus will be on enhancing the PS5 gaming experience for subscribers. Importantly, this change will not affect the monthly titles that players have already claimed; however, PS4 games in the Games Catalog will remain accessible until they are rotated out during the monthly refresh.

Sony emphasized its commitment to evolving the PlayStation Plus service, promising to optimize the benefits for subscribers. These benefits include exclusive discounts, access to online multiplayer, and online game save storage. As Sony pivots its attention to the PS5, it plans to continuously add new PS5 titles to the monthly offerings, ensuring a fresh and engaging experience for its users.

The decision comes as many PlayStation users have transitioned to the PS5, which was released in 2020 following the PS4's debut in 2013. Sony noted that a significant number of its players are now enjoying the PS5 and are more interested in accessing and redeeming PS5 titles.

It remains to be seen whether Sony will reposition PS4 games into the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from earlier PlayStation generations. More details on this are expected to be announced as the transition date approaches.
