We're finally delving into the Star Wars universe beyond The Rise of Skywalker, but not through Shawn Levy's eagerly awaited film Star Wars: Starfighter. Instead, fans will soon explore this post-2019 landscape through a new young adult novel titled Star Wars: The Last Order. This novel, revealed on Penguin Random House’s website, promises a deeper look into the lives of John Boyega's beloved hero Finn and Naomi Ackie's resistance ally Jannah, both introduced in The Rise of Skywalker. The book, penned by Kwame Mbalia, follows the Resistance as they rescue a ship full of kidnapped young passengers from the First Order. As Finn and Jannah embark on a mission to find the responsible First Order officer, they confront their own pasts as former stormtroopers.

In an interview with Deadline, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy discussed how the Star Wars timeline will evolve with Levy’s film. She stated, "It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." Jonathan Tropper, the writer for the film, expressed his enthusiasm to Screen Rant, saying, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." Shortly after, the film's release date was announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan, confirming Ryan Gosling as the star, with the movie slated for May 28, 2027.
