Summary

  • Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
  • Ubisoft’s stocks dropped sharply following the launch of Star Wars Outlaws in August 2024.
  • Players dislike the game's combat and stealth mechanics.

In more disappointing news for Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft's ambitious open-world title is reportedly being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Despite early reviews praising Star Wars Outlaws when it launched in August 2024, players have expressed significant dissatisfaction with the game's combat and stealth mechanics. Ubisoft has attempted to address these issues through subsequent updates, but these efforts have not fully satisfied the initial critics of the game.

The underwhelming reception has translated into disappointing sales figures for what was meant to be the first truly open-world Star Wars game. In September, Ubisoft admitted that Star Wars Outlaws had not met its sales expectations. Following the game's launch on August 27, 2024, Ubisoft's stock prices experienced a sharp decline, intensifying concerns about the company's future and sparking discussions about taking Ubisoft private. Despite these setbacks, both Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment remain hopeful that Star Wars Outlaws can recover, buoyed by plans for post-launch DLC.

Another setback to these hopes was recently reported by VGC and former GamesIndustry.biz journalist Christopher Dring, who disclosed that Star Wars Outlaws is not only underperforming but also being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Respawn Entertainment's sequel to the successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has managed to outsell Star Wars Outlaws, though specific sales figures have not been disclosed. In Europe, Star Wars Outlaws was recently ranked as the 47th best-selling video game of 2024.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is Outselling Star Wars Outlaws

Several factors might explain why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is outperforming Star Wars Outlaws. As a sequel to the well-received Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor benefited from an established fan base and received glowing reviews upon its release in April 2023. Additionally, EA and Respawn released an update for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS4 and Xbox One last year, reigniting interest in Cal Kestis's journey.

On the other hand, Star Wars Outlaws has struggled to capture a similar audience. Despite ongoing efforts from Massive Entertainment to release update patches and story DLC, the game has yet to find its footing. The first expansion, Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card, launched in November and featured Kay Vess teaming up with Lando Calrissian. The upcoming second DLC, Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune, is scheduled for release in Spring 2025 and will bring back the popular Star Wars: The Clone Wars character Hondo Ohnaka.
