Stellar Blade PC Adds Denuvo, Region Restrictions

Stellar Blade is preparing for its PC launch with a host of improvements. Still, as with other Sony-published games, it comes with geographic limitations. Explore the extra content and what it means for players in regions without PlayStation Network support.
Stellar Blade’s PC Release: The Pros and Cons
The Positive: PS5 Users Receive Free Update with Fresh Content and Features
Stellar Blade, the visually striking action RPG from Shift Up, is broadening its audience with a PC version packed with upgrades. However, the transition hasn't been seamless, complicated by Sony's early trailer leak and unexpected regional restrictions that caught even the developers off guard.
To give some background, before the official reveal on May 15, Sony accidentally gave an early look at the PC version. A trailer appeared on the official PlayStation YouTube channel ahead of schedule, disclosing key PC details like the launch date. Although it was swiftly removed, the video was quickly saved and shared across the internet.

PlayStation 5 users will be happy to hear that Shift Up has verified they will also receive the new content introduced alongside the PC edition.
In a PlayStation Blog update, Shift Up’s technical director, DongKi Lee, outlined the upgrades coming to both versions. These include support for NVIDIA DLSS 4 and AMD FSR 3 upscaling, unlocked frame rates above 120 FPS, and compatibility with ultrawide displays from 5:4 to 32:9. The game will also feature high-resolution textures, full keyboard and mouse remapping, DualSense controller support with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, and extra Japanese and Chinese voiceovers.
The PC edition also brings new challenges, such as a boss fight against Mann, the Sentinels' leader, plus 25 additional outfits for the main character, Eve. PlayStation 5 owners will get this content through a complimentary update on launch day.
The Negative: Stellar Blade PC Launch Hindered by Geographic Blocks and Denuvo DRM

While PS5 players get extra perks, the PC release of Stellar Blade faces challenges due to extensive regional bans and the inclusion of Denuvo anti-piracy software. SteamDB data indicates the game cannot be bought on Steam in more than 100 countries.
Shift Up clarified that connecting a Steam account to a PlayStation Network account is not required to play the RPG. However, there is a notable match between the restricted countries on Steam and areas without PSN access. This led many to conclude that Sony, as the publisher, was behind the decision.
The broad geographic limitations seem connected to Sony's strategy for PC releases and PSN integration. Sony has been bringing more of its PlayStation exclusives to PC to attract a wider player base. However, this move sometimes includes encouraging Steam users to link their PSN accounts. While this isn't a problem in most PSN-supported regions, it becomes an obstacle in countries where the service isn't officially available.
Sony defended the policy, as outlined by Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki during a November 2024 investor meeting, by emphasizing the need for a "safe" environment in live-service games. This rationale might hold for titles like Helldivers 2, but it seems less relevant for single-player experiences such as Stellar Blade and the Horizon series.
The scale of the restrictions has surprised many, including the development team, as shown in their social media replies. When questioned about the game's unavailability in certain areas, the official Stellar Blade account responded, "The PC version of Stellar Blade does not require a PSN account. Could you tell us where you're from?" along with a fearful emoji. Other users received similar answers.
This situation mirrors earlier disputes over PSN account linking, particularly the strong reaction to Helldivers 2's PSN mandate. That incident triggered a wave of negative feedback and compelled Sony to reverse its decision.
Adding to player frustration is the inclusion of Denuvo, a common point of contention. Denuvo is an anti-piracy tool, but PC gamers often criticize it for potentially reducing performance and limiting how they can access their games.
However, this concern may be misplaced, as the official Stellar Blade account reassured the community that "After rigorous testing and continuous optimization, the game maintains high performance across various hardware. Even on the Steam Deck, you can achieve 45-50 FPS with proper configuration!"

As the June 11 PC launch date for Stellar Blade draws near, the community is watching to see if Sony and Shift Up will respond to these concerns. For now, it's unclear whether the game will still be locked in many regions at launch. For additional Stellar Blade coverage, take a look at our related story below!
