Stephen King's Cujo Will Be Reimagined In New Netflix Adaptation

Mar 21,25

In the latest round of Stephen King adaptations—or, if you prefer a more optimistic outlook, another exciting Stephen King film announcement—a new take on Cujo is on the horizon. Netflix is set to produce a new film version of King's chilling tale, according to Deadline, with Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee attached to produce. Currently, the project is in its early stages; no writers or directors have been confirmed, and casting remains entirely speculative.

King's novel, originally published in 1981, was famously adapted into a 1983 cult classic horror film directed by Lewis Teague, scripted by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner. The story follows a mother (played memorably by Dee Wallace) desperately fighting to protect her young son from a rabid St. Bernard. Trapped in a car with a dead engine, they face a terrifying battle for survival against the relentless Cujo, whose transformation from gentle pet to savage killer is fueled by rabies and the relentless summer heat.

Cujo is just one of many beloved King stories successfully adapted to the screen, and recently, there's been a significant resurgence of King adaptations. Oz Perkins' version of King's short story, The Monkey, was released in February, and we eagerly anticipate the Glen Powell-led The Running Man, JT Mollner's adaptation of The Long Walk (also produced by Lee and Vertigo), and the IT prequel series, Welcome to Derry, on HBO. Furthermore, the iconic Carrie is being reimagined as an eight-episode Prime Video series from horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

King fans are certainly enjoying a feast of adaptations, and with this new Cujo project, the menu just got even more enticing.
