"Street Fighter Movie Taps New Director"

A new Street Fighter movie has chosen its director, and it's none other than Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the quirky comedy show, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this new film adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, with Capcom playing a significant role in the project. The movie is slated for a March 20, 2026 release date, marking another attempt to bring the iconic fighting game franchise to the big screen.

Fans of the franchise will remember the 1994 film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the unforgettable performance by the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. Although it received mixed reviews, it remains a cult classic. While casting details for the new movie are yet to be announced, it's safe to assume that beloved Street Fighter characters will make an appearance.

Originally, the project had Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou attached, but they left last summer. The selection of Sakurai, known for his absurdist style, suggests that Legendary might be aiming for a more unconventional take on the Street Fighter universe. As someone who enjoys the game's more whimsical aspects, I'm thrilled at the prospect of this new direction.

While we wait for more news on the movie, fans can dive into the latest Street Fighter game, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more details, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp].
