Switch 2 Price Overshadows Reveal

Apr 11,25

The excitement surrounding the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 has been palpable, especially with its new graphical capabilities. However, the absence of a new 3D Mario game—eight years after Super Mario Odyssey—has left some fans longing. Yet, the reveal did bring exciting news with the open-world Mario Kart World, the return of Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong Bananza, and the intriguing pseudo-successor to Bloodborne, The Duskbloods. But amidst the excitement, the price of the new console and its associated costs have sparked significant discussion.

At a retail price of $449.99, the Switch 2 itself isn't considered exorbitant for 2025 technology. However, the real concern lies in the additional costs required to fully experience what the console has to offer. The $80 price tag for Mario Kart World has particularly caught the public's eye, as it exceeds the typical $60 to $70 range we've grown accustomed to. This high cost, coupled with additional expenses like extra joy-con controllers ($90) and a Nintendo Online membership for global multiplayer, paints a picture of a potentially steep investment for a complete gaming experience.

The argument in favor of the higher price points, such as that for Mario Kart World, rests on the potential for long-term enjoyment. Given the enduring popularity of the Mario Kart series, with Mario Kart 8 lasting a decade, the $80 price might be justified for a game that could provide years of entertainment. In an era dominated by free-to-play models like Fortnite, our perception of value might be skewed, but the comparison to other forms of entertainment, like cinema outings, suggests that $80 for a decade of fun isn't unreasonable.

However, the pricing strategy raises concerns, especially with other Switch 2 titles like Donkey Kong Bananza at $69.99, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at $80 each. This approach from Nintendo, typically known for being player-friendly, may set a precedent for other game publishers to follow suit, potentially leading to higher game prices across the industry.

The topic of game upgrades also comes into play. PlayStation has offered $10 upgrades for some PS4 games transitioning to PS5, and while the cost for enhanced Switch games on the Switch 2 remains undisclosed, a similar pricing model might be acceptable. Yet, if the upgrades are priced at $20 or $30, it could deter many from investing in these enhancements.

For instance, the price difference between the current Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, available for $52 on Amazon, and the Switch 2 edition at $80, is striking. If the upgrade is only $10, it might be more cost-effective to purchase the original and then upgrade.

Speculation surrounds the Nintendo Online + Expansion Pack membership, currently priced at $49.99 annually, which includes enhanced versions of games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The question remains: what happens to access to these enhanced games if a membership is canceled?

Lastly, the decision to charge for the Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour—a virtual exhibition with minigames—feels out of place. Typically, such introductions are included as part of the console experience, as seen with Astro’s Playroom on the PlayStation 5. Charging for what feels like a hardware pack-in seems at odds with Nintendo's history of welcoming players with generosity.

Despite these pricing concerns, the Nintendo Switch 2 isn't likely to be a step backward for the company. With the momentum from the original Switch and its vast library of games, the console looks promising. The games revealed so far are impressive, and with more on the horizon, including hopefully a new Mario game, the future looks bright. However, the pricing of the launch offerings has caused immediate backlash, and it's crucial for Nintendo to heed this feedback to avoid setting a new, higher standard for game prices.

While the cost of the Switch 2 and its ecosystem has overshadowed the reveal to some extent, it hasn't entirely dimmed the excitement. The reveal wasn't the universal success Nintendo might have hoped for, but the console and its games still hold significant potential.
