T-1000 Gameplay in Mortal Kombat 1 Echoes Terminator 2, Surprise Kameo DLC Revealed
NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat 1, has unveiled the first gameplay footage for the much-anticipated DLC guest character, the T-1000, and confirmed the addition of Madam Bo as a DLC Kameo fighter. The T-1000's gameplay brings to life iconic moves from Terminator 2, including the use of blade and hook arms, which bear a striking resemblance to the attacks of Mortal Kombat characters Baraka and Kabal. Fans will also witness the T-1000 morph into a liquid metal form, executing an uppercut reminiscent of Killer Instinct’s Glacius.
The T-1000 is voiced and modeled after actor Robert Patrick, who portrayed the character in the 1991 film. In the teaser, Patrick's voice adds authenticity to the T-1000’s clash with Johnny Cage, culminating in a Fatality that recreates the thrilling truck chase from Terminator 2. Here, the T-1000 emerges from the driver’s seat to unleash a barrage of bullets on Cage.
In a surprising announcement, NetherRealm revealed that Madam Bo, a beloved character from the Mortal Kombat 1 storyline, will join the game as a DLC Kameo fighter alongside the T-1000. Known for her bravery in fending off Smoke and his thugs, Madam Bo's gameplay is briefly showcased, assisting the T-1000 in combat against Johnny Cage.
The T-1000 will be available in Mortal Kombat 1 starting March 18 for those with the Khaos Reigns expansion during its early access period, with a wider release on March 25. Madam Bo will also be available starting March 18, offered as a free update to Khaos Reigns owners or as a separate purchase.
As the final addition to the Khaos Reigns expansion, the T-1000 follows other notable fighters such as Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Speculation continues among fans about the possibility of a Kombat Pack 3, especially amidst discussions on Mortal Kombat 1's commercial performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, remains committed to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav announced plans to focus on four key titles, including Mortal Kombat. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat development chief Ed Boon has assured fans that NetherRealm decided on its next project three years ago but will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 for the foreseeable future.
Many speculate that NetherRealm's next venture might be a third installment in their DC fighting game series, Injustice, although no official confirmation has been made. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. After releasing Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, the studio opted for a soft reboot with Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023 instead of continuing the pattern of alternating between the two series.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Ed Boon discussed the reasoning behind this choice, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer version of the Unreal game engine (from Unreal Engine 3 in Mortal Kombat 11 to Unreal Engine 4 in Mortal Kombat 1). Boon emphasized their commitment to safety and the desire to utilize the new graphics engine effectively. He also reassured fans that the door remains open for future Injustice games, stating, "Not at all," when asked if the franchise was closed off.
