Telefonica Android Devices to Get Epic Games Store Preinstalled
Epic Games and Telefónica Forge Major Mobile Gaming Partnership
Epic Games has partnered with Telefónica, a major telecommunications company, to pre-install the Epic Games Store (EGS) on Android devices sold through Telefónica's brands. This means users of O2 (UK), Movistar, and Vivo (other regions) will find the EGS readily available.
This seemingly minor detail represents a significant strategic move by Epic for mobile gaming. Telefónica's global reach, encompassing numerous countries and brands, provides the EGS with unprecedented access to a vast potential user base.
The partnership places the EGS alongside Google Play as a default app store option on these devices. This addresses a key challenge for third-party app stores: convenience. Many users are unaware of, or unconcerned with, alternatives to pre-installed options. By becoming a default, Epic bypasses this barrier to entry, gaining a significant advantage in markets like Spain, the UK, Germany, Latin America, and beyond.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step for Epic, who have faced ongoing legal battles with Apple and Google. The partnership's long-term nature suggests further expansion and potential benefits for both Epic and consumers. This initial agreement builds upon a previous collaboration in 2021, where the two companies brought the O2 Arena (Millennium Dome) into Fortnite. This new deal signifies a major shift in Epic's mobile strategy, potentially leading to broader market penetration and increased user accessibility to their game catalog.
