Best Time to Buy LEGO Sets Revealed
In the not-too-distant past, less than a decade ago, adult LEGO builders were considered a niche group. LEGO catered to these Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) with occasional releases like the Creator Expert modular buildings, which were more the exception than the rule. However, over the last ten years, LEGO has undergone a remarkable transformation, rebranding itself to appeal to a broader audience. Today, LEGO sets are no longer just toys for children; they've become a mainstream hobby for teens and adults alike. While LEGO continues to offer original modular buildings, they've expanded their range to include scaled replicas of movie props, working amusement park rides, luxury car facsimiles, and much more. These sets are designed not for play, but for display, meant to be admired from a distance.
This expansion into more detailed and themed sets has led to higher prices, driven by increased piece counts and licensing fees for sets featuring third-party themes such as Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Nintendo, and Minecraft. While these higher retail prices might deter some buyers, it doesn't mean that LEGO enthusiasts will stop purchasing sets altogether. Instead, they might simply be more selective and spend their money more wisely.
LEGO maintains premium pricing and retires sets rather than allowing them to depreciate on shelves. To maximize your dollar and enhance your LEGO experience, it's crucial to be aware of specific times throughout the year when purchasing LEGO sets can be more cost-effective.
Double Insider Points
In August 2023, the LEGO VIP program was rebranded as LEGO Insiders. Joining this free loyalty rewards program on LEGO's official site offers various benefits, including the opportunity to purchase exclusive sets before the general public. However, the primary attraction for most members is earning Insider points on purchases made on LEGO's official website or at brick-and-mortar LEGO stores.
In the United States, every dollar spent earns 6.5 points, which can be redeemed at a rate of $1 for every 130 points. For example, spending $300 on a LEGO set earns you $15 towards future purchases, which is 5% of your initial spend. The real savings, however, come during promotional periods where you can earn double Insider points on select sets, effectively doubling your reward to $30 for the same $300 spend. These promotions are often announced in advance on LEGO's social media channels, so staying updated is key.
Sales Seasons
Black Friday and Cyber Monday
LEGO participates in the year's biggest shopping event, offering significant deals starting from the Friday before and extending through Cyber Monday. During this time, premium sets like the Batcave Shadow Box and the Pac-Man arcade can earn you 3x the Insider points, while sets such as the Hogwarts Chamber of Secrets and BMW M 1000 RR can earn you 4x the points. While information for Black Friday 2025 is yet to be released, you can find the best LEGO deals or check LEGO's Black Friday page for updates.
Amazon Prime Day
Amazon Prime Day, typically held in mid-July for two days, is another prime opportunity for LEGO deals. As a Prime member, you can take advantage of significant discounts on LEGO sets. Last year's Prime Day featured excellent deals on larger franchise sets from Marvel and Star Wars. Additionally, Amazon hosts an October Prime Day sale that often includes good LEGO deals.
Holiday Weekends
Beyond major shopping events, three-day weekends around federal holidays like Presidents' Day, Labor Day, and Memorial Day often present opportunities for discounts on LEGO sets at third-party vendors and sometimes at LEGO stores themselves.
Third-Party Outlets
LEGO sets are available at various third-party outlets, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and Best Buy. These outlets often have their own Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. However, note that, except for Target, these stores do not offer redeemable Insider points for LEGO purchases, although they may have their own rewards programs. Target's Insider point redemption rate is lower at 1:1 compared to the 1:6.5 rate at official LEGO stores.
Gifts With Purchase
LEGO also offers 'Gifts With Purchase' (GWPs), where spending a certain amount grants you a complimentary set. For example, spending $170 during Insiders Weekend earns you a Winter Market Stall, while $250 earns you Majisto’s Magical Workshop. At brick-and-mortar LEGO stores during Insiders Weekend, spending $40 in-person gets you a Holiday Winter Train. New GWPs are introduced monthly, sometimes even biweekly, so if you're not in a rush, consider waiting to see if the current GWP aligns with your interests.
May The 4th Be With You!
Star Wars Day on May 4th is a guaranteed opportunity for excellent LEGO deals. It's often when LEGO unveils its Collector Series replicas for the year. Last year, purchasing select sets earned 5x the number of Insider points.
The key to maximizing your LEGO purchases is to stay vigilant. While LEGO sets can be expensive, numerous deals are available throughout the year. By planning ahead and taking advantage of these opportunities, you can enjoy your LEGO hobby without the financial strain often associated with adult hobbies.
