TMNT Reunites in IDW's Latest at IGN Fan Fest 2025
IDW's ambitious approach to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise continues to captivate fans with new and exciting developments. In 2024, they relaunched the flagship TMNT comic under writer Jason Aaron, introduced a sequel to the best-selling TMNT: The Last Ronin, and launched a ninja-heavy crossover with TMNT x Naruto. As we move into 2025, the main TMNT series features a new regular artist and a refreshed status quo, with the four Turtles reuniting but not on the best of terms.
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, we had the opportunity to discuss the future of these series with Jason Aaron and TMNT x Naruto writer Caleb Goellner. We delved into how these stories evolve, the overarching mission for the TMNT line, and the potential for reconciliation among Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo.
The Mission Statement of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
IDW's rapid launch of multiple TMNT series, including the flagship monthly series, has been a resounding success. The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 sold approximately 300,000 copies, positioning it among the top-selling comics of 2024. Jason Aaron shared that his guiding vision for the series is to reconnect with the classic Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird TMNT comics from the Mirage era.
"For me, the guiding principle was to look back at the original series from Mirage Studios," Aaron explained. "Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the Turtles, and my first experience with them was through that black and white book. I wanted to recapture the grittiness and the intense action scenes of the Turtles fighting in New York City alleyways."
Aaron aims to blend this classic feel with a fresh narrative that reflects the Turtles' growth over the previous 150 issues of the IDW series. He focuses on their journey as they navigate personal and collective challenges, striving to reunite as the heroes they once were to face new threats.

TMNT #1's success aligns with other major comic reboots and streamlining efforts, such as Marvel's Ultimate Universe line, DC's Absolute line, and Skybound's Energon Universe. This suggests a strong audience demand for accessible entry points into beloved franchises.
"I'm thrilled to be part of this trend," Aaron remarked. "I focus on crafting stories that excite me, and when I got the call to work on Turtles, I knew I had a chance to do something special. Collaborating with a talented array of artists over the first six issues was incredible, and I believe we created a story that resonates with both long-time fans and newcomers."
A TMNT Family Reunion
Aaron's TMNT run begins with the Turtles scattered across the globe, each facing unique challenges. By the end of the first storyline, they reunite in New York City, though tensions run high. Aaron finds joy in exploring their dynamics and the challenges they face in coming back together.
"The first few issues were exciting as we saw each Turtle in different situations worldwide," Aaron said. "But the real fun begins when they're reunited, even if they're not thrilled to be together. They're at odds, and the city has changed, now weaponized against them by a new Foot Clan villain. The Turtles must overcome both external threats and their internal conflicts to prevail."
With issue #6, Juan Ferreyra steps in as the new regular artist, bringing a consistent visual style to the series. Aaron praised Ferreyra's work, noting his ability to capture the essence of the Turtles' adventures in New York City.
Merging the TMNT and Naruto Universes
The TMNT x Naruto crossover, crafted by Caleb Goellner and artist Hendry Prasetya, introduces a unique universe where the Turtles and the Uzumaki Clan coexist. Goellner credits Prasetya for seamlessly integrating the Turtles into the Naruto world through innovative redesigns.
"I'm thrilled with the results," Goellner shared. "I suggested a few basic ideas, like incorporating masks, but Hendry's work exceeded my expectations. I hope these designs inspire new toys."
The crossover also explores the dynamics between characters from both universes. Goellner enjoys highlighting various interactions, particularly those involving Kakashi and Splinter, as well as the humorous exchanges between Mikey and the group. He also appreciates the dynamic between Raph and Sakura, both key figures in their respective teams.
As the series progresses into Big Apple Village, Goellner teased a major TMNT villain's appearance, specifically requested by Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. This addition promises to heighten the excitement and engagement of fans.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 was released on February 26, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #3 is set for March 26. Fans can also look forward to IGN's exclusive preview of the final chapter of TMNT: The Last Ronin II - Re-Evolution.
