"Ultimate Engine Tweaks Mod Boosts Oblivion Remastered PC Performance"

May 29,25

If you're among the countless fans of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on PC, you may have already encountered its fair share of performance challenges. According to the technical experts at Digital Foundry, Oblivion Remastered faces severe performance issues on PC. Alex Battaglia, a video producer at Digital Foundry, described it as "perhaps one of the worst-running games I've ever tested."

"Even with the most powerful hardware available, the stuttering is unbearable," Battaglia noted. "It drags the experience down to a point where I genuinely can't comprehend how this made it through release. Beyond the hitching, it's one of the most resource-intensive games I've ever tested—so even if you're okay with the occasional lag, you'll still need to lower settings just to maintain an acceptable frame rate."

PlayIt’s no surprise then that the most-downloaded mod for Oblivion Remastered on Nexus Mods is P40L0’s 'Ultimate Engine Tweaks (Anti-Stutters - Lower Latency - No Film Grain - No Chromatic Aberration - Lossless),' which has been downloaded over 386,604 times in under a week.

Here’s the mod description:

"Definitive Unreal ‘Engine.ini’ changes aimed at eliminating most stutters, boosting performance and stability, reducing input latency, and enhancing picture clarity—all without sacrificing visuals."

"After months of UE5 testing, I’m excited to share my definitive custom ‘Engine.ini’ tweaks for the game," explained P40L0. "My goal was to incorporate as many optimizations as possible (for both CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD) to minimize stuttering, improve performance, cut input latency, and enhance picture clarity (such as removing Film Grain & Chromatic Aberration, optimizing DLSS/FSR upscaling, etc.) without losing any visual quality or introducing glitches or crashes."

Reactions from users who installed the mod are overwhelmingly positive. "Stutter gone! Simply amazing, thanks!" wrote chubbyd07. "This .ini tweak is a miracle. From 15-20 fps outside the prison to 65-70 stable. Running on 3600XT and a 2060 with 20GB of RAM (yes)," added yeeto51. "Uhm, what the heck! I went from 60fps on High Preset near Waynon Priory to 90-110fps on the same spot. Wizardry!!" exclaimed BabaSmith.

Despite its performance issues, Oblivion Remastered remains incredibly popular, boasting an impressive Steam concurrent peak player count and over 4 million players across all platforms. It holds a 'very positive' user review rating on Steam. However, a hotfix released on April 25 caused issues for Microsoft Store players, particularly affecting their UI settings for upscaling and anti-aliasing. As of this writing, Microsoft Store players (via Game Pass for PC) cannot adjust these settings due to the UI issue. Bethesda has acknowledged the problem and is working on a fix.
