These five cards form a "cycle," each connected by a shared design philosophy across Magic's color spectrum. They are all cost-effective, common-rarity creatures, each with an ability linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans, and another that allows you to convert mana into a color from that clan.
“Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing at all levels of rarity,” explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “Our goal was to ensure that numerous decks could benefit from mana fixing, leading us to craft several designs specifically for this purpose. These creatures not only help with mana development but also allow players to advance their board presence simultaneously—unlike tapped lands, which only provide mana and can put you at a disadvantage while fixing your mana.”

From the action-driven Jeskai monks to the mystical Temur Whisperers, the protective Sultai Nagas, the diverse Mardu military, and the regenerative efforts of Abzan clerics, each card adds depth to the narrative of Tarkir.”
Recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting established planes. This makes Tarkir: Dragonstorm a refreshing return to form. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. “The core concept for Tarkir was set well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. Our vision was to fuse Dragons and Clans in a novel way for Tarkir, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role. Lauren and I felt the pressure to get it right from the start, aiming to authentically expand the lore of this cherished plane.”Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with its official release slated for both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will begin on April 4. Continue reading for an in-depth interview with Wizards of the Coast’s Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl.
