Viola Davis' 'Waller' Series In Works, Says James Gunn

Marvel's James Gunn wants to set the record straight: the circulating rumors are false. The head of DC Studios has officially confirmed that the upcoming "Waller" television series remains actively in development.

The veteran producer recently addressed the show's status on Threads, replying to a fan who inquired if speculation about "Waller" being retooled into a "Checkmate" series was inaccurate. Gunn provided a simple, one-word confirmation: "yes."

Another fan followed up for absolute clarity, asking, "So 'Waller' is still in development?" Gunn again responded with a definitive "yes."

This firm confirmation from the DC Universe boss is welcome news, especially considering his recent acknowledgment of behind-the-scenes challenges during the show's development. "Frankly, 'Waller' has faced a couple of setbacks," Gunn explained at a DC Studios press event with co-head Peter Safran in February.

Otherwise, specific details about the series have been limited. It was first announced in January 2023 as part of the initial DCU slate, positioned as a "Peacemaker" spinoff. The story was set to explore the fallout after Viola Davis's Amanda Waller and her daughter, played by Danielle Brooks's Leota Adebayo, exposed Task Force X at the end of "Peacemaker" Season 1. However, the 2023 industry strikes significantly disrupted plans, necessitating rewrites to align with the revised DCU timeline and causing major production delays.

The series is being developed by "Watchmen" writer Christal Henry and "Doom Patrol" showrunner Jeremy Carver. While public information remains scarce, Gunn's confirmation marks significant progress for the project, which fans hope to see next year. Fingers crossed.
