Apr 06,25

This year's ninth TennoCon was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing some mind-blowing reveals that have left the Warframe community buzzing with excitement. The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the announcement of Warframe: 1999, which promises to be one of the most thrilling updates in the series' history.

Before diving into the main event, players can look forward to a prologue quest set to release in August 2024. Titled "The Lotus Eaters," this quest will reunite players with one of Warframe's most iconic characters and serve as a follow-up to "Whispers in the Walls," introducing the world of 1999. This update will also introduce Sevatgoth Prime along with their exclusive weapons. To fully experience Warframe: 1999, players must complete all the story up to and including "The Lotus Eaters" before the update's release in Winter 2024.

Set in the titular year, Warframe: 1999 takes place on an alternate Earth where Y2K is a deadly virus threatening to destroy everything. The action unfolds in the city of Höllvania, a 90s wonderland corrupted by Techrot. Players will navigate this environment using the new Atomicycles, which allow for bullet jumps, drifts, and can even be used as makeshift explosives. Leading the charge are the six heroes of the Hex, each donning a Protoframe that showcases the human inside. Arthur, the leader, wields Excalibur, while allies like Aoi with Mag and Quincy with the newly introduced CYTE-09 join the fray. This new frame will also be available in the Origin system, complete with a stylish beret.

The Hex team is brought to life by a talented cast including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and the recently acclaimed Amelia Tyler from Baldur's Gate 3. Players can get to know these characters better through a 1999-style instant messaging system, and perhaps even find someone to kiss as the new year approaches.

To fully immerse players in the 1999 vibe, they'll encounter a 90s boy band called On-lyne, led by Zeke, voiced by Nick Apostolides, known for his role as Leon Kennedy. This band has been corrupted by the Technocyte Coda, turning them into infected foes. Despite their sinister transformation, their hit single "Party of Your Lifetime" is now available on all major streaming platforms.

One of the most exciting aspects of this update is the enhancement of the fashion system, which many consider the true endgame of Warframe. Players will now have the ability to switch between two fashion frame loadouts during battle. Additionally, the introduction of Gemini Skins allows players to bring Protoframes like Arthur and Aoi into the Origin system. While this feature is limited to frames with these skins, such as Excalibur, each comes with pages of fully-voiced lines for in-battle interactions and casual conversations with the operator, making the most of the stellar voice acting talent.

Anime Arthur and Aoi

Beyond the main announcements, Digital Extremes is collaborating with animation studio THE LINE to produce an anime short related to Warframe: 1999, set to launch later this year. Additionally, players can now acquire a stunning high-fidelity Heirloom skin for Ember, with a Rhino skin to follow in early 2025.

With Warframe: 1999 set to launch in Winter 2024, there's plenty to catch up on and more exciting content on the horizon. Make sure to download Warframe now from the App Store to stay ahead of the game.
