Wesley Snipes Queries Blade MCU Reboot Delay

Nov 05,25

The screenwriter behind Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy has expressed willingness to collaborate with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to revive Mahershala Ali's stalled MCU reboot of the iconic vampire hunter.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blade reboot has encountered numerous obstacles throughout its development, leaving the project essentially shelved with dim prospects for revival.

Last month, musician Flying Lotus shared on social media that his involvement composing music for Blade dissipated when the project collapsed. "The opportunity seems completely distant now," commented the artist, who recently directed Shudder's sci-fi horror ASH. "It would've been exciting, but I'm skeptical about its return."

Costume designer Ruth E. Carter disclosed during an interview that she had begun crafting 1920s-era designs for Blade before production unraveled—a setting that promised remarkable visual potential for both costumes and production design.

Actor Delroy Lindo, originally cast alongside Ali, revealed Marvel initially valued his creative input during early discussions. "The collaborative spirit made the project thrilling," he told Entertainment Weekly. "But ultimately, everything derailed unexpectedly."

Announced at 2019's San Diego Comic-Con with a planned November release, Blade has cycled through multiple directors including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq without securing permanent leadership.

Original trilogy writer David S. Goyer expressed bewilderment about Marvel's delays during a ScreenRant interview. "Absolutely," he responded regarding potential involvement. "As a Marvel enthusiast, I'm completely perplexed by these prolonged setbacks."

Though removed from Marvel's schedule seven months ago, Feige reaffirmed commitment to Blade during a November 2024 interview with Omelete: "We're determined to introduce this version of Blade into the MCU when the timing aligns."

The MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine—featuring Snipes' brief return as Blade—grossed $1.3 billion globally, prompting Ryan Reynolds to advocate for a proper conclusion to Snipes' iteration akin to Logan.

Reynolds credited Blade's 1998 debut with establishing the superhero film market, stating on X/Twitter: "Without Blade paving the way, neither Fox's X-Men nor the MCU would exist—he's Marvel's trailblazer."

Recent reports indicate Reynolds is developing a Deadpool/X-Men crossover where the antihero would share narrative focus with multiple mutants, allowing unconventional character exploration.
