Xbox Keystone Canceled Console's Design Surfaces in Patent Leak
A recently unearthed patent offers a glimpse into the design of the cancelled Xbox Keystone console. While previously hinted at by Phil Spencer, this streaming device never made it to market.
Microsoft explored various strategies during the Xbox One era to recapture lapsed players, including the launch of Xbox Game Pass, which has since expanded significantly across the Xbox Series X/S. Prior to Game Pass, Games With Gold provided free titles. However, Games With Gold concluded in 2023, coinciding with Game Pass's introduction of tiered subscriptions. Since Game Pass's inception, Xbox has alluded to a dedicated console for cloud-streaming Game Pass content. This newly discovered patent reveals the device's intended design and functionality.
Windows Central recently uncovered details of the Xbox Keystone, envisioned as a streaming device comparable to Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick. Patent images depict a circular top reminiscent of the Xbox Series S, featuring an Xbox power button and what appears to be a USB port on the front. The rear panel showcases an Ethernet port, HDMI port, and a presumed power connector. A pairing button for controllers is located on the side, with ventilation slots on the back and bottom. A circular base elevates the device for optimal airflow.
Why the Xbox Keystone's Cancellation?
Microsoft's ongoing xCloud testing since 2019, while beneficial for optimization, likely couldn't overcome cost hurdles. The projected price point of $99-$129 proved unsustainable. This suggests that the technology needed to stream Game Pass games via xCloud exceeded the target cost. Considering Xbox consoles are often sold at or near manufacturing cost, a sub-$129 price point for the Keystone was likely unachievable. However, future technological advancements could potentially make such a device feasible.
Despite Phil Spencer's past comments, the Xbox Keystone's existence wasn't entirely clandestine. Though shelved for now, its concept may inform future Xbox initiatives.
