The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Feb 02,25

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, amassing a phenomenal game library, many of which continue to see re-releases. While these titles initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, they are now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a floppy-eared cat-like creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. It boasts vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are essential additions to any collection.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's most significant achievement and a catalyst for PlayStation's success. While the remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Although later entries in the series became more eccentric, the original stands as a thrilling, action-packed adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its enjoyable gameplay is a major draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

Let's explore some lesser-known titles. G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm remains intact. The vibrant colors, engaging capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs create a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While I could fill this list with Square Enix games, I'll limit it to this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, tasked with following one of the most beloved RPGs, falls short of Chrono Trigger's legacy. However, viewed independently, it's a brilliant and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast of characters and an unforgettable soundtrack.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, nostalgia clouds my judgment. Objectively recommending Mega Man X titles, I'd suggest only Mega Man X and Mega Man X4. X4 stands out with its superior structure. The Legacy Collections offer a perfect opportunity to experience these titles firsthand.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many non-first-party titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with engaging action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins developer, its initial charm gives way to challenging gameplay. Its resurgence is welcome.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn game, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Created by the Lunar team, Grandia offers a bright and cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system enhances Game Arts' Lunar series strengths.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures (five in total) varied in quality. Personally, I prefer the original, focusing on tomb raiding over action. This collection allows players to decide for themselves.

moon ($18.99)

A deeper cut, moon (originally Japan-only) deconstructs the traditional RPG, even labeled an "anti-RPG" by its creators. More of an adventure game, it's unconventional and challenging but offers a unique message. Its English release is a welcome addition.

This concludes the list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch? Share your thoughts in the comments! Thank you for reading.
