"Avowed Director Leaves Obsidian for Netflix's Oxenfree Studio After 13 Years"
Carrie Patel, the director behind the acclaimed RPG Avowed, has recently left Obsidian Entertainment, a move that comes just months after the successful launch of the game. Patel, who had been with Obsidian for over 11 years, contributed to significant titles such as The Outer Worlds and the Pillars of Eternity series, before taking the helm of Avowed after its early development reboot.
In a recent update to her LinkedIn profile, Patel announced her transition to a new role as Game Director at Night School, a studio owned by Netflix and renowned for the Oxenfree series. "I'm happy to share that I'm starting a new position as Game Director at Night School: A Netflix Game Studio!" Patel shared, though details about her upcoming project remain undisclosed.
Night School gained prominence with its narrative-driven Oxenfree games, the latest being Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals released in 2023. Despite launching Thronglets, a Black Mirror spin-off, earlier this year, the studio faced layoffs. Additionally, Netflix shut down another of its studios, which was developing a AAA game led by Halo veteran Joseph Staten.
Under Patel's direction, Avowed evolved from its initial concept of a dark fantasy akin to The Elder Scrolls with a single open world and co-op multiplayer, to a more vibrant and distinctive experience. The final game features multiple large maps and is entirely single-player, receiving mostly positive feedback. Patel had envisioned expanding the Avowed universe through expansions or a sequel, though she will not be involved in these future endeavors.
Last week, Obsidian unveiled a development roadmap for Avowed, outlining free updates over the next six months, including a Photo Mode and New Game Plus. IGN's review praised Avowed for its worldbuilding and character writing, but noted that it played it safe, offering a familiar fantasy adventure.
Looking ahead, Obsidian's next release, The Outer Worlds 2, is set to be highlighted at the Xbox Games Showcase in June this year.
