Borderlands 4 CEO Defends $80 Price for "Real Fans"

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford claims dedicated Borderlands fans will prioritize purchasing the upcoming title regardless of cost. Discover how the gaming community reacted to his comments and publisher Take-Two Interactive's perspective on modern game pricing strategies.
Borderlands 4 Pricing Controversy
Gearbox CEO's Divisive Stance on Fan Loyalty
As Borderlands 4 approaches launch, developer Gearbox Software continues revealing details - though one critical piece remains undisclosed: the final price. With speculation suggesting an $80+ price tag, concerns grew after Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford responded to fan pricing worries on Twitter/X. When questioned about affordability on May 14, Pitchford shifted responsibility for pricing decisions while suggesting true enthusiasts would find means to purchase regardless of cost.
The remarks sparked significant backlash across gaming communities. Many criticized the CEO's tone, calling it one of the most tone-deaf executive responses in recent memory. Players highlighted how additional expenses like season passes and cosmetic items could potentially double the $80 base price, making Pitchford's comments particularly insensitive.

During a PAX East panel on May 10, Pitchford addressed pricing concerns while remaining noncommittal. "Development budgets have significantly increased," he explained, citing Borderlands 4's production costs as more than double its predecessor. "Between rising production expenses and retail tariffs, the pricing landscape has become challenging. I genuinely don't know where retail pricing will land."
The CEO's suggestion that price-resistant players aren't "real fans" particularly resonated negatively. Many longtime series supporters now question purchasing intentions following what they perceive as corporate disregard for consumer financial realities.
Take-Two's More Nuanced Pricing Philosophy

Contrasting Gearbox's approach, Take-Two Interactive adopted a more measured stance regarding premium pricing. In discussion with IGN, CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized value proposition when addressing potential $80 game pricing.
"Our longstanding philosophy centers on delivering exceptional entertainment value," Zelnick noted. "When comparing gaming to other entertainment mediums - whether cinema tickets, live events, or streaming services - the value proposition remains outstanding. That value creation remains our core responsibility."
The CEO elaborated: "Our objective transcends simple transactions - we aim to deliver exponentially greater value than our asking price. Consumers recognize and support premium experiences that justify their cost." This perspective accompanies 2K's recent $50 pricing announcement for Mafia: The Old Country, though industry speculation suggests Grand Theft Auto VI may command premium pricing exceeding $100.

Take-Two maintains flexibility in pricing strategy across titles. Zelnick told GamesIndustry.biz on May 16: "We've consistently implemented variable pricing based on each game's scope. As entertainment creators bringing blockbuster experiences worldwide, our commitment remains delivering value that exceeds our pricing."
The Borderlands franchise currently navigates multiple challenges, including recent review bombing following EULA changes. With pricing concerns compounding existing issues, Gearbox may need to reevaluate community engagement strategies as fan sentiment shifts.
