Channing Tatum's Gambit Film: A '30s Screwball Romance in Superhero Setting
Channing Tatum's long-awaited Gambit movie, which was ultimately canceled, was set to embrace a unique '30s screwball romantic comedy vibe within the superhero genre, according to actress Lizzy Caplan. In an insightful conversation with Business Insider, the star of Cloverfield shed light on the project, where she was slated to co-star with Tatum. Caplan described the concept as having "a really cool idea," showcasing the film's innovative approach to the superhero narrative.
Tatum's journey to portray the beloved X-Men character, Gambit, has been fraught with challenges. His efforts to bring the card-wielding mutant to the big screen were thwarted following the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum feeling "traumatized" and fearing he would never get the chance to play the role. However, fans were thrilled to see Tatum make a surprise cameo as Gambit in the MCU blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine.

Caplan, who was set to play the female lead in the Gambit movie as early as 2017, confirmed her involvement and shared that she had engaged in discussions with Tatum about the project. "We got down the road, we were gonna shoot it," Caplan revealed. "I think there was a start date."
Simon Kinberg, the producer behind the Gambit movie, elaborated on the film's tone in a 2018 interview with IGN, stating it would have a "romantic or sex comedy vibe" fitting Gambit's character. "When you look at Gambit," Kinberg noted, "he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy."
Seven years later, Caplan reinforced this vision, saying, "They wanted to do, like, a '30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world, which would have been really fun."
As for what lies ahead for Tatum and Gambit, Marvel Studios has yet to provide clear answers, though the studio has confirmed the integration of the X-Men into the MCU. The excitement around Gambit's future was further fueled in August last year when Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds shared a high-quality version of a scene from Deadpool & Wolverine on Twitter, sparking speculation among fans.
