In a recent Bloomberg interview, Carrie Patel, the second game director of Avowed, provided an insightful look into the turbulent development journey that resulted in the abandonment of two years' worth of work. Initially, Obsidian Entertainment had a grand vision for Avowed, aiming to blend the cooperative exploration of a vast open world, inspired by Destiny and Skyrim, with robust multiplayer features.

The first teaser trailer, released in 2020, sparked excitement among fans, but behind the scenes, the game was far from ready. Mere months after the trailer's debut, the decision was made to completely overhaul the project. As a result, the teaser now serves as a nostalgic reminder of an unreleased prototype that shares little to no similarities with the final game.

Following this pivotal reboot, Carrie Patel stepped in as game director and fundamentally reshaped the project's direction. She moved away from the initial inspirations of Skyrim and Destiny, discarding the open-world and multiplayer aspects. Instead, Obsidian returned to their roots by adopting a zone-based structure and concentrated on developing a rich, single-player narrative deeply embedded in the lore of Pillars of Eternity.

The decision to restart mid-development posed significant challenges, similar to attempting to produce a film without a script. Development teams toiled under uncertain circumstances as the leadership worked to forge a unified vision. Despite these obstacles, the process extended over an additional four years until Avowed was finally ready for release.
