"Death Note: Killer Within" - An Anime Twist on "Among Us"
Bandai Namco has just unveiled an exciting new addition to the gaming world with Death Note: Killer Within. This game, inspired by the iconic anime and manga series, promises to immerse players in a thrilling experience that captures the essence of Death Note. If you're a fan of the series or simply enjoy games like Among Us, you're in for a treat.
Death Note: Killer Within Releases This November 5
Two weeks ago, the gaming community was abuzz with rumors of a new Death Note video game after it was rated in Taiwan. Speculations ranged from whether it would follow the manga’s storyline or be a sequel to previous games. Now, the wait is over. Death Note: Killer Within is set to launch on November 5 for PC, PS4, and PS5, and it will be part of PlayStation Plus’ free monthly lineup.
Developed by Grounding, Inc. and published by Bandai Namco, this online-only game is reminiscent of the popular Among Us. Players will step into the shoes of either Kira, the notorious antagonist with the Death Note, or the members of L's team, tasked with stopping him. In sessions accommodating up to 10 players, the game pits teams against each other in a tense battle of wits. As Kira's team works to maintain his power and eliminate L's team, the latter strives to uncover Kira and seize the Death Note. The dynamic gameplay mirrors the suspenseful cat-and-mouse chase of Among Us, relying on deduction, deception, and a dash of luck.
"The Death Note is hidden among the players, leading to a thrilling game of cat and mouse until one team overpowers the other," Bandai Namco stated on the game’s official website.
Customization plays a significant role in Death Note: Killer Within, with players able to unlock up to seven types of accessories and special effects during key gameplay moments. While the game is exclusively online, the developers recommend using voice chat to enhance strategizing with teammates or to add to the excitement as you try to prove your innocence.
Death Note: Killer Within Price Undisclosed, Could Suffer the Same Fate as Fall Guys at Launch
As part of the PlayStation Plus November lineup, subscribers will enjoy early access to Death Note: Killer Within without any additional cost, alongside Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged. PC players can also dive into the game via Steam, thanks to cross-play functionality that connects players across different platforms.
However, the game's price remains a mystery. If it's set too high, it might struggle to compete with other deduction-based party games like Among Us, potentially facing a similar fate to Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout at its launch. Fall Guys initially offered for free on PlayStation Plus in August 2020, but its $20 price tag, coupled with the lack of competitive features, led to declining sales. Eventually, Epic Games acquired it and transitioned it to a free-to-play model with in-game purchases.
It's uncertain if Death Note: Killer Within will have a set price at launch. Yet, the game's association with the well-known Death Note IP could help it stand out in the crowded party game market, regardless of its cost.
Death Note: Killer Within Gameplay Overview
Death Note: Killer Within features two primary phases that echo the gameplay of Among Us. During the Action Phase, players roam virtual streets, gathering clues and completing tasks while keeping an eye out for suspicious behavior. This is Kira's chance to use the Death Note discreetly, targeting NPCs or even other players. But remember, everyone is watching, and any suspicious move could put you under scrutiny.
The Meeting Phase follows, where the real drama unfolds. Players gather to discuss their findings, vote on potential suspects, and decide Kira's fate. It's a high-stakes environment where alliances are tested, and deception reigns supreme.
Unlike Among Us, Kira in Death Note: Killer Within can have followers who assist through private communication and by stealing IDs—a vital strategy in a game where real names hold power. These followers might even receive the Death Note if Kira chooses to pass it on. Meanwhile, Investigators work tirelessly to connect the dots and narrow down the suspects, bringing them closer to unmasking Kira.
If you play as L, you have unique abilities to steer the investigation. You can install surveillance cameras during Action Phases and guide discussions, expose inconsistencies, and narrow down suspects during Meeting Phases.
Success in Death Note: Killer Within hinges on teamwork and deception. If the game gains traction, expect to see a flurry of streamer highlights and thrilling moments among friends. This could be the next big hit in the world of party games.
