BG3 exec lauds Dragon Age: Veilguard vision

Larian Studios' Publishing Director Michael Douse has shared enthusiastic praise for BioWare's upcoming action RPG Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Here's what the Baldur's Gate 3 executive had to say about the highly anticipated title.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Earns Accolades from Larian Studios Executive
"The First Dragon Age With Clear Creative Vision" Says BG3 Publishing Director
Michael Douse (@Cromwelp), publishing director at Larian Studios (developers of Baldur's Gate 3), has publicly applauded BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The executive revealed on Twitter that he's been secretly playtesting the game, humorously claiming he had to hide behind his backpack at work to do so.
Douse particularly commended the game's focused creative direction, stating it's the first in the series that "clearly understands its identity." This marks a significant evolution from previous Dragon Age installments that sometimes struggled to balance narrative depth with gameplay mechanics. The BG3 executive likened the experience to "a perfectly paced, character-driven Netflix series" as opposed to "an overly long prestige drama."
The publishing director also highlighted the innovative combat system, describing it as "a brilliant fusion of Xenoblade Chronicles and Hogwarts Legacy" mechanics. This shift brings The Veilguard closer to BioWare's Mass Effect series in terms of fluid, combo-based action rather than the more methodical approach of earlier Dragon Age games.

Douse emphasized the game's excellent pacing, noting it maintains strong narrative momentum while providing ample opportunity to experiment with class mechanics. This balance represents a thoughtful departure from traditional RPG conventions while honoring BioWare's legacy at a time when, as Douse put it, "corporate decision-making often undervalues creative vision."
The most compelling aspect for Douse was The Veilguard's distinct identity. While acknowledging his personal preference for Dragon Age: Origins, he clearly respects the new installment's confident direction. "In short? It's incredibly fun to play," Douse concluded.
Deep Character Customization in The Veilguard Empowers Players

Dragon Age: The Veilguard introduces Rook, a fully customizable protagonist with unprecedented player agency. According to Xbox Wire's preview, players will enjoy remarkable creative control over Rook's backstory, abilities, and moral compass as they recruit allies to confront ancient Elven deities.
The character creation system ensures every choice impacts gameplay meaningfully. Players can select from core classes (Mage, Rogue, Warrior) with unique specializations like the Spellblade - a magic-wielding melee hybrid. Personalization extends to the player's in-game headquarters (The Lighthouse), where narrative choices visibly shape the environment.
"These customization options made my Rook feel truly personal," one developer explained. "Even seemingly minor decisions, like my character's facial tattoos, reflected his unique history in meaningful ways."

This depth of character customization likely contributed to Douse's enthusiasm. With its October 31 release approaching, BioWare appears poised to deliver an RPG that blends rich storytelling with fluid action gameplay.
In our review, we noted how The Veilguard smartly modernizes the series with more dynamic combat while maintaining BioWare's signature narrative depth. The game earned a 90/100 score for its successful evolution of the franchise. For our complete analysis, see the full review below.
