Square Enix Developing Dragon Quest 7 Remake for 2026-2027 Release

Square Enix, the publisher behind Dragon Quest, is preparing to revive a beloved classic, Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.

Per MP1st, leaked internal documents have revealed several unannounced projects, including a remake of the seventh core Dragon Quest title.

Notably, unlike other remakes labeled as HD, this project lacks that designation, per MP1st, hinting at more than a mere visual upgrade or retextured remaster. Details remain unclear, and official confirmation may be months away.

The leaked documents indicate the reimagined Dragon Quest 7 is slated for release between early 2026 and 2027, aligning with Square Enix’s fiscal year and financial projections.

In other Dragon Quest news, the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is set to launch on October 30, 2025, across PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store), PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix recently confirmed compatibility with the Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, new details emerged about pre-order bonuses and a special Collector’s Edition.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii recently reassured fans that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate remains in active development. Announced in 2021 during the series’ 35th anniversary, marking the first mainline entry since 2017’s Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, updates have been sparse. In February, Horii shared that the Square Enix team is “working diligently.”

“Yes, I can’t reveal much, my apologies,” Horii stated in May. “I’m pouring effort into it... The next title will be exceptional. I’m working hard, so please stay excited.”
